Historic AnnapolisThe area of Annapolis real estate has been inhabited since 1649 by Puritan exiles. The town was known as Town of Proctors, Town at the Severn and Anne Arundles before it was became Annapolis. The town was named Annapolis after Princess Anne, who was soon going to be the Queen of Great Britain. The town was incorporated in 1708, becoming one of the earliest towns to officially become a city in the United States. Annapolis became noted for its cultivated and wealthy society until the War of Independence.
The first weekly news journal was the Maryland Gazette in 1745. The first theater was opened in 1769 and, by 1780, water trades such as sailmaking, boat-building and oyster packing were the main industries of the area. Now, Annapolis is home to several recreational boats, replacing the city's seafood industry. In 1783, Annapolis became the temporary capital of the US. Congress had sessions here from November 1783 to June 1784. In December 1783, General Washington was in Annapolis and resigned as commander in chief of the Army. During the Civil War era, Annapolis housed a major hospital for wounded Union soldiers and Confederate prisoners.
By the time the 20th century came around, there were over 8,500 people residing in Annapolis. Today, the city is booming, growing in leaps and bounds with several subdivisions and other low density developments coming to the area.
Educating Annapolis Students Annapolis schools are served by the Anne Arundel County Public Schools system. There are a total of 79 elementary schools, 19 middle schools and 12 high schools in the district. There is also one charter school and several private schools in the area for alternatives to a public education. Five of the district's schools were recognized for their accomplishments with Title 1 awards from the Maryland State Department of Education.
Higher education needs are met by the John Hopkins University, St. Johns College, US Naval Academy, Anne Arundel Community College, University of Maryland, Strayer University and Bowie State University. All of these high quality schools are located within 15 miles of Annapolis real estate.
