History of Solomons Island

The area of Solomons Island was settled during colonial times and has been known by two other names before it was known as Solomons: Bourne's Island and Somervell's Island. The Webster family opened the Island's first grocery store. As it was the only one in the area, it became a profitable business. Since land was so cheap and the business was doing so well, the Webster family bought most of the land in the area.

The Island became known as Solomons Island in the 19th century, named after Isaac Solomon, a Baltimore businessman who created a cannery on the Island after the Civil War. Isaac Solomon's home still stands on the island's front side. Also, shipyards were developed around this same time to support the Island's fishing fleet. Famous for its bugeyes, the Marsh Shipyard also built sloops and schooners. In the War of 1812, Commodore Joshua Barney sailed his flotilla on the Chesapeake Bay to attack British vessels.

The Island was home to the Allied command during World War II. It was used for training amphibious invasion forces. What they learned from this proved invaluable on D-Day at Guadalcanal, Tarawa and many other military operations. At nearby Patuxent River, three naval bases were built, which made a large contribution to the war effort and brought several new jobs to Solomons Island residents. More than 60,000 other troops trained on the Island during the war. Most of the troops were sent to fight in the Pacific Ocean at Solomons Islands.
